Reminder of Jesus’ Sacrifice

“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.” (1 Corinthians 11:26)

The Lord’s Supper looks back to the death of Christ on the cross of Calvary. The death of Jesus is a good and bad thing at the same time. His death was considered the most sorrowful death in history. He died on false accusations, received the most excruciating torture, and was rejected by some of his disciples. But the good thing about Christ’s death is the good news for all of us – salvation through the shedding of his blood.

God sent His son to die on the cross so that our sins would be forgiven, and that through him we can have eternal life. He gave this tremendous gift to us. The supper is the symbol of our remembrance of his sacrifice. On the night that he was betrayed, he took the bread and said to his disciples, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you”. The symbol of this bread and this cup is indeed significant. Paul reminded us in the book of Corinthians how valuable these elements are, “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
